About the Author: Ed Mishrell
For more than four decades, Ed Mishrell worked to provide opportunities for America’s youth. He began his career working as a probation officer in upstate New York. He then moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he earned a Master of Social Work at Temple University. Upon graduation he began a nearly 40-year career in the Boys & Girls Clubs Movement beginning at the Crime Prevention Association, a Boys & Girls Club organization in Philadelphia, PA.
In 1987 Ed joined the staff of Boys & Girls Clubs of America as the Director of the Targeted Outreach Delinquency Intervention Program. He has held numerous positions at BGCA including the Director of Staff Development, the Senior Director of Training and Development, Vice President, Program Services, Vice President Technology Services, Vice President Strategic Initiatives and Vice President Training and Professional Development. He has led the development of numerous national program and strategic initiatives including executive leadership, deepening impact and assuring public trust. As Vice President of Training and Professional Development, Ed led the development of Boys & Girls Club Leadership University to provide training and professional development resources for Boys & Girls Club professional staff and the creation of the Advance Leadership Program for Club Executive Teams. The Advanced Leadership Program was developed in partnership with Noel Tichy at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business.
Beginning in 2009 Ed became the Chief Strategy Officer at Boys & Girls Clubs of America, responsible for organizational strategy, strategic planning, operational planning, organizational data and outcome measurement systems. In this role Ed brought many innovations to BGCA’s strategic and operational planning process, led the development of an outcome measurement initiative utilized by over 90% of member organizations and led the development of two Boys & Girls Club Movement Strategic Plans.
After retiring from Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Ed became an adjunct professor at Georgia State University where he taught a course entitled Systems and Strategies in the Public Administration graduate program. The course addressed how to lead key operating mechanisms including strategic planning, operational planning, outcome measurement, organizational structure, stakeholder engagement and leading change.
Ed holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Alfred University, a Master of Education from Elmira College, and a Master of Social Work Administration from Temple University.
